Should I consider out of network therapy?
Out of network therapy is a considerable investment. Could it be right for you? I would recommend that you explore in network options on your insurance company's find-a-provider webpage first. See if you can find a therapist who is experienced with using evidence based approaches for the concerns that you have, and see if they are accepting new clients.
If you have already explored options with in network therapists, out of network therapy could be your next step. Out of network therapy may also be a good option for you if you are dealing with a concern that does not meet criteria for a mental health diagnosis, such as parenting stress, or if you are highly motivated to make efficient progress.
If you have been receiving therapy in network for a long time and you haven't been making progress, consider the secondary costs of symptoms interfering with your life over time. Emotional distress, declining health, or impaired functioning in your education, career, or relationships may also factor into your decision about whether now is the right time to pursue out of network therapy.
Call the number on the back of your health insurance card and ask these questions.
1. Do I have out-of-network benefits for mental health services?
2. What is my out-of-network deductible? How much of my out-of-network deductible has already been met?
3. What is my policy period?
4. What is the allowable amount (also called usual and customary rate)?
5. What is my coinsurance?
6. Do I need a referral from my primary care physician or a pre-approval before I can get out-of-network therapy?
7. Is there any limit on number of visits?
8. How do I submit the superbill and how long do I have after the date of service to submit it?

How do I find out about my out-of-network benefits?
How do I calculate the cost of out-of-network therapy?
Here is an example. Please keep in mind that this is just a made-up example. You will need to contact your insurance company for information specific to you.

-
Allowable amount for CPT code 90837: $200
-
Out-of-network deductible: $3000
-
How much of your out-of-network deductible has been met: $500
-
Policy period: July 1, 2023 - June 30, 2024
-
Coinsurance: 50%
If the session rate is $210, here is how you calculate how much you would pay for therapy.
First you pay the full rate, $210, until you reach your out-of-network deductible.

Number of visits it would take you to meet your out-of-network deductible: (3000-500)/210 = 12
Here is how you calculate how much you would pay after you have met your out-of-network deductible.
Session rate minus allowable amount: 210 - 200 = $10
Coinsurance percentage applied to allowable amount: 200 * .5 = $100
Amount remaining for you to pay after coinsurance: 200-100 = $100

Total your insurance pays per session: $100
Total you pay per session: 10 + 100 = $110

In Network Billing
If you are using insurance to pay for your sessions, we will work together through a company called Headway to navigate all matters related to insurance.
Out of Network Billing
If I do not accept your insurance plan, you may still opt to work with me as an out of network provider. If your insurance plan provides Out of Network benefits, I can provide you with a receipt of our services (called a "superbill") so you may collect reimbursement from your insurance company.
Good Faith Estimate Notice
