Radically Open Dialectical Behavior Therapy (RODBT) for Obsessive Compulsive Personality Disorder (OCPD)
RODBT is an evidence-based treatment approach for disorders of excessive self-control, including OCPD. Individuals with overcontrolled personality styles have many strengths. They are detail-oriented, planful, structured, disciplined, and conscientious. However, in excess, these traits can interfere with relationships. RODBT helps overcontrolled people to prioritize social connection and to become more open to new experiences, receptive to feedback, and adaptable to change.
RODBT posits that Open expression = Trust = Social connectedness. Therefore, how you express yourself to others, referred to as social signaling, is the primary focus of RODBT. Social signaling is anything you say or do in the presence of other people and includes tone of voice, eye contact, body language, and facial expression.

RODBT has two components: individual therapy and a skills class.

Skills Class
30 1-hour lessons teaching RODBT skills in a small group format

Individual Therapy
Your time to process insights from RODBT lessons and apply them in your own life
1.
RODBT skills class is jam-packed with important lessons for overcontrolled people.
This treatment approach includes a 30-week skills class. This class is educational in nature (is not group therapy). Insurance is not accepted for the skills class.
I am currently offering a 1-hour virtual skills class with 5-7 participants on Tuesdays from 12-1pm Central Time for adults in PSYPACT states.
The format of the class includes oral instruction, silly (yes, silly!) class activities, breakout rooms (one on one practice), summary handouts, and homework.
Example lesson topics include mindfulness training, using validation to signal social inclusion, and learning from corrective feedback.
The RODBT treatment approach also includes an individual therapy component. I do accept insurance for individual therapy.
I do not require class participants to be in therapy with me (or at all). However, concurrent participation in RODBT skills class and therapy provides the best opportunity for class participants to benefit maximally from the class.
This form of individual therapy is fairly structured and provides a safe space to break down social signaling problems and identify possible solutions, to explore how social signaling problems that are common for overcontrolled individuals may affect you, and to do the difficult and often vulnerable work of changing to meet your valued goals.
